The Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC) is a leading Ugandan research institution working primarily for biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of natural resources in the protected areas of the Albertine Rift ecoregion – a global biodiversity hotspot.

ITFC was Established in 1991 as a semi-autonomous research institution and field station of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) to carry out ecological and sociological research, monitoring and training. We are located on the Eastern border of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Ruhija, Rubanda District in Southwestern Uganda.

ITFC has built a highly creditable track record of conservation achievements that are of a global, national and local significance. The growing human pressures on the natural resources in the Albertine rift ecoregion has only served to further enhance the value of our work in conservation.

Our staff is made up of people with many years of experience and great passion for conservation – who work with the highest integrity to deliver the highest quality of timely and evidence-based research results. This is in line with our mission “to be a leading institution that supports ecological and sociological research, monitoring and training in the Albertine Rift ecoregion”.

Since our establishment in 1991, ITFC has disseminated most of its research to a wider national and international audience in form of publications (more than 200) and workshops. Some of our prominent publications have been showcased in high impact journals such as Science, Biotropica, Conservation Biology and Forest Ecology among many others.

Being a research institution focused on biodiversity conservation, ITFC’s efforts heavily rely on sponsorships by several donors and partners. Even with the current financial support that we appreciate to no end, long term financial security remains and challenge. Therefore, continuing support is required and donations to support and keep our work going are greatly appreciated.
